Equity in Education

IST members were invited to join the Indian Studies Program's staff in an orientation to Equity Audits by Enid Lee on Monday and Tuesday, December 1 & 2, 2008. About a dozen IST members participated in the two half day sessions. In addition, some of these trainees were also able to sit in with Enid's equity audits of classrooms at Gastineau and Glacier Valley Elementary Schools.

A follow-up discussion about how this equity work fits in with the IST work we are already charged with occurred a few days later, at the JSD-IST meeting on December 5th. The group was reassured by Haifa that the intent of the training was to focus our lenses of equity in order to assist teachers in improving their practice, and not to be used as part of teacher evaluations. It was also mentioned that Enid (et.al.)'s book, "Beyond Heros and Holidays" would be made available to each school's IST. Haifa also asked that we each review "Equity, Learning, and Culture" before our next meeting, and come back with questions, comments and suggestions to refine the document for use in Juneau.
